Can't say I love it, but it's hard to hate this one. Kholdstare recommended me this stylish Halloween themed anime named Soul Eater, saying that the fights are pretty good, there isn't much fanservice, and it's kind of funny.
Well, at least one of them is right.
In the world of Soul Eater, Death is a school administrator who has students train other students, who can turn themselves into weapons, until they're powerful enough to become Death's next anthropomorphized scythe. They slay evil, eat their souls, and live in this crazy world where the sun and moon have faces and everything resembles Halloween Town from Nightmare Before Christmas.
As with most anime shows, one of the most amusing things for me to do is to catch all the anime tropes that are stuck in the show. I notice that all the males are like twelve and often partnered with 16-18 year old girls, probably because they can go the fanservice route and show their tits all the time. One of the characters is the typical irritating, arrogant loudmouth who will "never give up". There's plenty of humor at some times when you don't expect it.
Those things often times annoy me. They made me swear off anime for a long time, because it's really hard to strike a good balance between the over-the-top humor and melodrama. I say all the time that Cowboy Bebop is the only good anime I've ever seen, which is not totally true. It does illustrate a point - it had a lot of great humor, and it mixed that with a really fun world and wonderful style, so that it's not just one thing for its whole run. That's the type of thing Soul Eater does pretty well, too. Its world and crazy visual style make for something that is much different than Naruto or Bleach.
